Beyond Belgrade

Past the reach of a day trip, Serbia opens into places that ask for a night or two: monasteries in the Raska valleys, a Roman palace in the east, thermal towns that have been in business for a century, and the mountains that hold snow into spring. These pages cover what each one charges, when it opens, and how you get there without a car when that is possible.

Where an operator publishes nothing, we say so rather than guess. Several of the sites here keep no hours online at all, and one of them is run by a public company with no website, which is worth knowing before you drive four hours to find out.

Sokobanja: The Baths, the Water and What They Cost

Sokobanja's thermal baths run by the town's special hospital: what a soak costs with or without a doctor's referral, why no opening hours are published, and what the water is officially said to help with.

Place guide

Vrnjacka Banja and Its Mineral Springs

What the four treated springs are classified as, what the hospital claims they help with, and the pool prices, hours and access rules that Merkur's own site doesn't settle.

Travel guide

Kragujevac: The Memorial Park and the Old Capital

What the Sumarice memorial's two ticket types cost, why its own English and Serbian pages disagree on opening hours, what the National Museum of Sumadija shows, and how to reach the city from Belgrade.

Travel guide

Nis Airport to the City Centre

What Nis's Constantine the Great Airport publishes about getting into town: taxi and rental car as the only listed options, a two-year-old fare range, no confirmed bus, and the current scheduled and charter airlines.

Sopocani Monastery

Sopocani's own website is offline, so this page relies on the Eparchy of Raska-Prizren and UNESCO: the mid-13th-century founding, two centuries without a roof, the 1979 World Heritage listing, and why hours, dress code and accommodation stay unpublished.

Travel guide

Novi Pazar and the Old Town

The base for Sopocani and Studenica, with a fortress-turned-park, a sixteenth-century mosque and a working hamam of its own, but no train and no named bus operator.

Place guide

Felix Romuliana

The Roman palace built for Emperor Galerius keeps its finest sculpture eleven kilometres away in a Zajecar museum: what the tickets cost, when the site is open, and what actually stands at Gamzigrad versus what has moved to town.

Place guide

Djavolja Varos

A field of wind-and-water-carved earth pyramids in southern Serbia, protected since 1959, whose own website disagrees with itself on when winter closure starts: what is solid, what isn't, and how far the drive actually is.

Place guide

Cele Kula, the Skull Tower of Nis

A war memorial built from the skulls of Serbian fighters killed at the Battle of Cegar in 1809: what it costs to visit, when it's open, and the history behind a monument the National Museum of Nis now protects.
